Education
Customised learning for global impact
We provide specialised postgraduate programmes and tailored courses designed to immerse students in the practical and theoretical aspects of the geothermal field. With globally recognised qualifications, hands-on experience, and industry engagement, we foster global leaders prepared for success.
Our Programmes
Postgraduate Certificate in Geothermal Energy Technology
Semester Two
60 Points
An intensive, single-semester, hands-on qualification for engineering and science graduates wishing to pursue advanced research or a career in geothermal energy.
Master of Energy
Semester One and Semester Two
120 or 180 Points
Designed to meet the ongoing need for experts across the energy sector, this programme equips students with the expertise needed to build careers in an ever-evolving field.
Master of Science
Multiple Times
120 to 240 Points
The Master of Science (MSc) programme enables you to pursue advanced study in your area of interest with the opportunity to work on independent research.
Doctor of Philosophy
Any Time
3 to 4 Years
The PhD is a globally recognised postgraduate research degree and the highest level of degree you can achieve. PhD students are critical, curious, creative thinkers who undertake original research over at least 3 years.
Our Courses
We also provide short courses, workshops, and training. We have delivered these in Australia, the Caribbean, Chile, Iceland, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, and the USA as well as in New Zealand.
Geothermal Project Management (GPM) Courses
New Zealand
Funded by the Manaaki New Zealand Short-Term Training Scholarship, we offer focused Renewable Energy and Geothermal Project Management courses five times a year, specifically designed for ASEAN and African nations.
National Geothermal Association of the Philippines (NGAP) Training
Philippines
In partnership with the National Geothermal Association of the Philippines, we delivered four one-week courses for early-career geothermal professionals in the Philippines. The courses covered: geosciences, above-ground engineering, reservoir modelling and resource assessment, and project management.
Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) Workshop
Taiwan
Delivered an intensive two-week reservoir modelling workshop for ITRI (Taiwan). Course participants developed and calibrated a reservoir model of a Taiwanese geothermal system.
African Rift Geothermal (ARGeo) Conference Workshop
Tanzania
Delivered pre-conference short courses in partnership with Jacobs. These courses covered geothermal reservoir engineering and applying the UNFC framework for geothermal resources.
Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) Training
Indonesia
For the last three years, through a close relationship with PGE, we have provided multiple rounds of mentoring to their staff. Held in New Zealand, PGE staff will work in our offices, learning reservoir modelling applied to their geothermal fields.
Iceland School of Energy Course
Iceland
Since 2018, The Geothermal Institute has taught reservoir modelling through intensive block courses for the Iceland School of Energy, as a part of their MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering program.
From Our Courses
What our students had to say
“My partner and I were drawn to Auckland for the work opportunities and appealing lifestyle. I found that the University of Auckland was the best option for me to gain the knowledge and skills required to enter the energy industry.“
“New Zealand is not only a place with beautiful landscapes, it is also teeming with various geothermal areas and parks. I work in the geothermal industry back home and find that studying here is a good chance to look at geothermal development, right at its very root.“
“Auckland has plenty of fun activities for the whole family. This was an important factor in our decision to move to Auckland for my PhD, and we have had a great time here.“
